愛知県の都心部から約3時間、匠の里とよぶのにふさわしい飛騨高山という地区に、田中木工はあります。
専務を務める哲也さんは、元々現場肌で、今でも自ら図面製作やファーストサンプルのアールをとる作業もやっています。
特徴のひとつである5軸制御のNC工作機も、昔ながらの職人さんには使えない最新機器も見事に操っています。
学生時代から、手ノコやノミ、カンナといった道具とは親しみがあった哲也さんは、高山木工芸術スクールを卒業後、有名家具メーカーで2年間修行し、家業を継ぐことになります。
5軸制御のNCという高度な機械を導入するにあたり、若く柔らかい能力を呼び戻されました。1990年代後半にピークを迎えた売上は、不況などで落ち込む時期もありました。しかし、時勢にあわせて生産量の調整などを行い、今では国内トップクラスの生産本数を誇るメーカーとして名を連ねています。

そんな一流の作り手が、最も大事にすることがあります。それは強度です。もともとパブリックユースをメインとして取り組んでいらっしゃるので、接着剤が半分しかつかないイレギュラーな状態でもこわれることがないように設計を行なっています。
控えめな哲也さんは、恥ずかしそうに東京スカイツリーや、帝国ホテルなど誰もが知っている有名な所で使って頂けることは素直に嬉しいと語ります。また、最新の機械を用いて、出来ない構造や形はほとんどないと語る姿には、自信とも決意ともとれるオーラを感じました。
田中木工は、今社員40名で国内での椅子の生産効率トップクラスの企業となっています。

Tanaka Woodwork is located in Hida, Takayama district, known as Takumi no Sato, about 3 hours from the city center of Aichi Prefecture.
Mr. Tetsuya Tanaka is the managing director but has worked before on scene and even now he is doing the first design of the product. He is manipulating the latest equipment an NC (computerized numerical control) machine tool with 5 axis control which cannot be used by traditional craftsmen.
Mr. Tetsuya Tanaka, was familiar with tools such as handsaw, chisel, and kana and after graduating from Takayama Woodworking Art School, and after practicing for 2 years at a famous furniture manufacturer will succeed family business. A young person with a soft ability was necessary in introducing and manipulating the advanced machine called NC with 5 axis control. There was a period of depression, which peaked in the latter half of the 1990s. However, the production volume was adjusted according to the time changes and now has a name as a manufacturer boasting the top number of domestic production in Japan.

Every top-notch maker has something that puts accent on it and for Tanaka –san that is strength. We are mainly producing for public use, and we are designing products that it will not break even in an irregular state where the adhesive is only half.
Tetsuya-san said modestly that he is happy to find out that his products are been used in famous places known to everyone, such as Tokyo Sky Tree and Imperial Hotel. Moreover, I felt an aura of confidence and determination, when he said to us that there are almost no structures or shapes that cannot be done using the latest machines.
Tanaka Woodwork has now 40 employees and has become the top class enterprise in domestic chair production.
